Hotel Kurrajong

Canberra, Australia

Hotel Kurrajong is a lovely heritage hotel in the parliamentary zone in Canberra. The hotel was built in 1926 and was home to many politicians in the early years of the city. The most prominent politician who made his home at the Kurrajong was Ben Chifley, he stayed there during his parliamentary career. When he became Prime Minister he preferred to live at the Kurrajong rather than the Prime Ministerial official home of The Lodge. I love a heritage hotel selecting this hotel for a recent stay in Canberra was as the saying goes 'a no brainer'!

Price

I stayed in their Classic Queen Room, and the price was at the lower end of the scale. (Not the budget end!) Breakfast was not included, the restaurant options were either a buffet cold continental selection or a buffet hot selection.

Location

The hotel was on the National Circuit, it's 700m from Old Parliament House which explains why Ben Chiefly liked staying there! It was a nice stroll to work, there's a statue of Ben Chiefly and John Curtin walking to Parliament House on the National Circuit. The hotel is also close to the National Gallery, the Portrait Gallery and the High Court. It's only a 15 minute drive to the airport, so very convenient location.
The downside to the location is that the area is predominantly offices, it's lacking in city amenities which are mainly on the other side of the lake.

Facilities

The hotel has 147 rooms, there's only 2 floors, there's an old style staircase to go upstairs, or a modern elevator. The rooms have a coffee pod machine, an iPhone docking station, room safe, a minibar and free wifi. There is faster wifi available at a cost, but I used the free wifi and it was fine.

The hotel has a restaurant and bar, there is also room service available.

It is an old hotel but the rooms have been extensively renovated and the interiors are all very modern.

The bathroom has quality toiletries and I appreciated the magnified mirror!

There was a huge walkin shower.

The bathroom window looked out over the hotel courtyard.

Optional Extras

The hotel lounge which was lovely and homey, it was nice to sit by the fire with a drink from the bar or a coffee. The restaurant is to the right of the picture.

The restaurant opens out to a courtyard.

Rear entrance to the courtyard.

My recommendation

Lovely hotel, enjoyed my stay and would stay here again when visiting Canberra.
