Camden High Street, London

Camden was a new area of London for me to explore, I went there primarily to visit the markets but enjoyed the various sights on the High Street as well. I've already written a post about my visit to the markets. http://theresabigwideworld.blogspot.com.au/2015/06/camden-lock-markets.html To get to the Lock markets from the Camden town Tube Station, you needed to walk up the High Street. It's a one way street lined with small shops, mainly clothing and souvenir stores. What makes the High Street interesting is how some of the buildings are decorated from the outside. Just before arriving at the Lock markets I saw this store, it's a clothing store and those are old sewing machines, in the little window boxes. I loved the display, totally charmed by it. A close up. I did think this display was solely for this particular store, but then I saw an All Saints store in Berlin that also had a sewing machine window display. So perhaps it's their trad...

Museum of Old and New Art (MONA)

Hobart, Tasmania MONA is Tasmania's newest attraction, it opened in January 2011. The museum is the largest privately funded institution in Australia and it houses the collection of its (very wealthy!) owner, David Walsh. Full disclosure here in that I'm not the biggest fan of modern art, so originally this museum wasn't on my list of places to see in Tasmania. But I had recently read a travel writer's report his visit and he had caught the ferry up the river from central Hobart. I loved the idea of a ferry ride on the river and then seeing some art. The ferry departs from the Brooke Street Pier which also houses a large tourist booking service so it's possible to buy a combined ticket for the ferry and entrance to the museum. Once at MONA there are 99 steps up from the jetty to the main external area. There was some huffing and puffing from the ferry passengers going up the stairs! Having successfully negotiated the stairs, you are then reward...

Sheffield Tasmania

The town of murals Sheffield is a small town in northern Tasmania that has become well known for its murals. In the 1980s the local tourist board, inspired by a small town in Canada that had painted murals, came up with the idea of painting murals on the town buildings as a tourist attraction. Most buildings in the town have a mural painted on them and there's a Mural Festival held every April. I had decided to spend a night in the town after leaving Cradle Mountain. Sheffield is about an hour's drive from the National Park and I had read about the murals so it seemed the perfect place to stay. The town certainly didn't disappoint and I loved the murals. This was the first mural to be completed in December 1986, it shows Gustav Weindorfer, the man responsible for having Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair declared a National Park. The scene depicted is his chalet in the park area with snow on the ground. The murals illustrate notable people from the local area. ...
