Heritage hotels

Hotels with some character

Peacock Room, Astor House Hotel, Shanghai China

Frequent travellers know that after a while hotel rooms all feel the same, for that reason I like to find heritage hotels and accommodation to stay in. The added bonus is that, often there's some interesting history attached to the hotel as well.

Astor House Hotel, Shanghai China

The Astor House hotel is across the creek at the north end of The Bund. The original hotel was established in 1846, but sadly closed earlier this year as the building was sold and is to be converted to office accomodation. I was fortunate to stay in the hotel, it has quite a history with notable guests such as Albert Einstein, the beautiful Peacock Room was where the Shanghai Stock exchange was established from 1920 to 1949. The room was also where the stock exchange was reestablished in 1990.

Hotel Lippert, Prague Czech Republic

Hotel Lippert is a sweet family run hotel in a fabulous location, it's right on the Old Town Square in Prague. The location is great as it's possible to walk to all the major sites. The rooms have traditional handpainted ceilings and old style double windows.

County Hotel, Napier New Zealand

County Hotel in Napier, this graciousl old building, built in 1909, had been the location of the local council and was one of two significant buildings that survived the 1931 earthquake. It's now a delightful heritage hotel.

Old Phuket Karon Beach Resort, Phuket Thailand

This hotel does have a modern wing and a Sino-Portuguese wing. As well as individual rooms, there are villas.

Beech Hill Country House, Derry Northern Ireland

Beech Hill is a lovely estate just outside the city of Londonderry/Derry in Northern Ireland. The house was built in 1729 and was a private family home, it was bought by the current owners in 1989 and converted to a hotel. Staying here is an experience, gracious living in the countryside! The U.S. Marines camped out in the grounds during World War II and there is a room commemorating their time at the estate.
