Station House, Sheffield Tasmania

Where to stay recommendations.

Top of my criteria for finding accomodation is always a place with some history attached. I love any old building that has been restored, repurposed and brought back to life. Station House in Sheffield fit this criteria perfectly, it had been the police officers' residence and the house was built in the 1930s. The current owners bought the house in 2016 and converted it to holiday accomodation.

There are three self-contained apartments in the house, two that can be entered from the front door and one at the back of the house with its own separate entrance. The driveway is quite wide and can comfortably fit the guests' cars without anyone blocking another guest. All three apartments were occupied whilst I was there and we had no problem with parking.

I stayed in the apartment that ran down the left side of the house, where the pergola is in this picture of the front of the house.

Price

Excellent value, at B&B prices, breakfast foods were included so the guests could make up their own breakfast.

Location

Station House is in the town of Sheffield, it's close to the main part of the town. I chose to stay in Sheffield after visiting Cradle Mountain as it looked more interesting than other options. It's less than an hour from Cradle Mountain and the available accomodation was much cheaper than the lodges around Cradle Mountain. The town itself is worth visiting just to wander around and see the murals that its known for.

Sheffield is about 20 minutes from Devonport (and the ferry) and about an hour from Launceston.

Facilities

It's a one bedroom apartment and beautifully fitted out, Station House was only opened in April 2017.

Looking down the apartment, the entrance door to the apartment is on the right, once inside the front door there are two separate doors for each apartment.

The lounge room with french doors leading out to a deck. The lounge room had some homey touches such as the boardgames in the fireplace area and a coffee table book of Tasmanian scenery. (A TV was in the bedroom)

The kitchen area leading into the bedroom. I even liked the rustic nature of the kitchen cabinets. There is a microwave but no stove, so the cooking facilities are very limited. Breakfast items are left, cereals, milk, bakery items, tea and coffee  for guests to make up their own breakfast.

The fireplace in the kitchen area does have a working wood stove for those cold winter evenings. I was there during a summer heat wave so the fireplace was purely decorative!

Some more nice touches, the Ferrero Roche chocolates and fluffy slippers!

The bedroom area and door leading to bathroom, the door on the right is locked I assume it leads to another apartment.

Compact bathroom with hairdryer and toiletries.

Optional Extras

Breakfast items, slippers and chocolates.

Summary

Really lovely place to stay, it's also located in a residential area so it's quiet and makes it feel like you're part of the town. I'm very happy I chose this accomodation and would recommend it to anyone doing a driving holiday of Tasmania.
