Accomodation with a touch of yesteryear.
I like to choose places to stay that have a bit of character and have a story attached. The Metropole Guesthouse in Katoomba fitted that bill, even the name 'guesthouse' rather than hotel to me harks back to another era. The guesthouse dates back to the early 1930s and it was built to cater for visitors coming to the Blue Mountains from Sydney. It was opened in 1933 as a guesthouse and Temperance Hotel offering all modern conveniences! It was run as a guesthouse until the early 1980s when the accomodation side was closed and it operated as a series of bars. By the late 1980s that venture wasn't successful and the premises were sold and then refurbished and it went back to its original incarnation as a guesthouse.
The Entrance Foyer
Price
Quite reasonable, lower end of a nice hotel cost. Breakfast was extra but again reasonable, the cooked breakfast was $15 and the continental was $9.
Location
Great location, 2 minutes from the train station. I could see the Metropole from the train window as we were coming into the station. It's also just around the corner from Katoomba's main street with all the cafes and restaurants. Easy access to the local buses to get you to Katoomba's attractions.
Facilities
The room was spacious and comfortable, free tea and coffee with biscuits and a small minibar offering drinks that you paid for. The wifi connection and speed were both very good. There's a lift that takes you to the upstairs rooms.
Optional Extras
Upstairs there's a games room with a billiards table and a closed in library with books to borrow as well as an in-house jigsaw to work on.
The room that can be seen through the slats is a functions room where concerts are held.
The library.
There's also a small lounge upstairs called 'Jessie's Lounge', there was an information sign that said it was named after a long term guest who had made the Metropole Guesthouse her home. She used to sit in this lounge and read, there's a photo of her in the room. I just loved this little bygone era homely touch.
Jessie's Lounge. (It's in the centre of the building and looks out onto the railway station)
Summary
The price and location makes this an excellent base for a visit to Katoomba. For those who like a little character in their accomodation this is perfect as well.
