Loved this one!
Casa Veneziana is an historic apartment building in Rijeka, one of those old apartments has now been divided into two apartments available for short term tourist rental. As I love an old building, this accomodation was perfect!
The apartments are listed on travel sites as 'Casa Veneziana, Rijeka' I discovered there are other 'casa venezianas' in different cities, including the original Venezia. (Venice!) The building dates back to the Austro-Hungarian era and was built in the late 19th century.
Price
Excellent value, for an apartment. It's probably the best equipped apartment I've ever stayed in for 'extras'. The owner gives you a bottle of wine, snacks including fruit. The kitchen has oil, coffees, hot drinks, the bathroom has full sized products.
Table snacks and wine, snacks included are dried figs, peanuts, sweets and muesli (granola) bars, as well as fresh fruit.
Kitchen board selection of items, salt, coffees, hot drinks, sugar.
Location
The apartment is an easy 5 to 10 minute walk from the bus station, it's next to the pedestrian area of Rijeka and an easy stroll to the waterfront. Everything is closeby.
Facilities
The apartment is run Airbnb style, so the owner contacts you by text message (his English is excellent) and you arrange a time to meet outside the building. He then takes you inside, shows you how everything works, gives suggestions on where to go, places to eat (I got a recommendation for a restaurant in the suburbs of Trsat which was terrific!) He was the perfect accomodation host.
The apartment was air-conditioned and had wifi.
The lounge area, the couch can be made into a bed, door on the left is the bathroom and the other doorway is the kitchen.
The old Austrian era oven is still there! Loving historical details as much as I do I was thrilled to see it. I assumed this had been the kitchen of the original apartment.
The kitchen, it had a full-size oven and a dishwasher (not in the picture) And surprisingly for an European home, a kettle! Catering to non-european tourists!
Doors leading to bedroom, again delighted with the old double doors for formal rooms, as it's leading off the kitchen this room could have been the dining room.
Bathroom, shower area.
Bathroom, vanity.
Optional Extras
A sense of history! Although the apartment is quite modern, the building isn't so it does give you a sense of what it would have been like living there at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The green doors are the external doors out to the street. The staircase is original complete with terrazzo floor. Austrian era steps aren't steep as walking up multiple flights of steps needed to be like walking!
The double door to the apartment, it's on the first floor, up one section of steps.
The interior is quite dark so the owner shows you how to switch on the hall lights, they're timed so will switch off by themselves. Again giving the guest an authentic experience!
Once inside the double doors you can see where the developer has divided an old large apartment into two smaller one bedroom apartments for rental. I was in apartment A, there's tourist information left out for visitors.
Summary
Can't recommend this apartment highly enough, thoroughly enjoyed staying here, I particularly liked the owner being helpful with local recommendations. I do plan to stay here again.
