Accomodation with character
The Port Masters Lodging can be found in East Devonport in Tasmania, close to where the Spirit of Tasmania ferry docks. James Sayers bought the house and land in 1867, he extended the house for his large family of 10 children. He was a self appointed Master of the Port, he ran punts to move freight and brought Steamers into the Mersey River. The house is now divided into separate self-contained apartments. I stayed in the Captains Cabins at the back of the house.
Front verandah
Price
It's good value for money as you're paying for a small apartment, it's somewhat cheaper as it's in the East Devonport area so across the bridge from the main city centre.
Location
Very close to the Spirit of Tasmania dock, a short drive across the bridge into the city centre and coastal areas beyond. There's a small supermarket around the corner, it's a suburban street with a school across the road. It's a very quiet area.
Facilities
I stayed in the one bedroom apartment called the Captains Cabins. There was a lounge with a small kitchen area, a wet area with a washing machine and the bathroom. At the back of the apartment was the bedroom.
The lounge and entrance
I loved the quirky way it was furnished with an old Singer sewing machine base as the table legs, the coffee table is an old door, the desk is some sort of machine base as well.
The kitchen area with a 2 burner cooktop, a toaster and kettle, the microwave is in the next room.
The laundry room
Compact bathroom
Interesting use of chairs for storage here!
Optional Extras
Plenty of onsite parking and there's a large garden to enjoy, the property is fenced and you're given a code to open the front gate.
Summary
I loved this accomodation, there was something charming about the way it was furnished it was good value for money. Interesting for me was that all contact with the owner(s?) was done by electronic messaging, the code for the gate, then the number for the key lock at the apartment.
