Christmas Lights
Christmas light displays can be found all around the world. I like the home display of lights that can be found in Australia. Having Christmas during the summer months means that you can go out on a balmy night, in t-shirts and shorts, walk down the street and admire all the light displays.
Some South Australian country towns are known for their Christmas lights, Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills has the largest community lights display in the Southern Hemisphere. (Sadly now cancelled due to the major bushfires of the past few days) Another country town further away from Adelaide has an annual December Christmas lights display and that's Loxton in the Riverland. Companies organise bus tours to stay overnight and view the light displays.
Closer to home are the neighbourhood street lights, and I headed off to view one of the displays during the recent heatwave, reasoning that there would be fewer people as the night time temperatures were in the high 30s (Celcius, 90sF). Plan did work, there were fewer people and less cars, but still a constant stream of people looking at the displays, bringing along their dogs for a nightly walk and the Ice Cream Van with a steady stream of appreciative customers.
I prefer community Christmas lights events to the more corporate displays of lights, there's something nice and wholesome that people want to decorate their homes to give pleasure to others. Australian lights displays are also nice as warm evenings make it really pleasant to walk around, with darkness not falling until later, it's cute to see young children in their summer pyjamas going for a walk and then it's home to bed!
