Great location!
The Royal Hotel in Cardiff fits one of my criteria when looking for a place to stay. I like anywhere with a bit of history attached, the Royal Hotel was purpose built as an hotel in 1868. Its main historical link is that Antarctic explorer Captain Scott had a fundraising banquet held in his honour on the 13th of June 1910, two days before his expedition sailed for the Antarctic from Cardiff Bay. (There was a 'Race to the Pole' competition with Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, Amundsen would beat him to the South Pole by 5 weeks, Scott reached it but died on the return trip)
Back to the hotel!
Price
Cardiff isn't an expensive city to visit and I would categorise this hotel in the affordable range.
Location
Excellent location, about 5 minutes from Cardiff Central station, right in the main part of the city. The rugby stadium now called Principality Stadium is just behind the hotel. The main shopping centre is 5 minutes away and Cardiff Castle is at the end of the street. Cardiff Bay is a 20 minute walk away.
The hotel is not on the ground floor of the building, you need to go up to the First Floor (Second floor if you're American!). The St Mary Street entrance has stairs that lead to the elevator to go up, the Wood Street entrance has a ramp. (Which I didn't discover until after hauling a suitcase up stairs!!)
Facilities
The room was well equipped with what one would expect from a 3 star hotel, the wifi speed was good.
Optional Extras
The room where Captain Scott held a banquet before he left for Antartica is now named for him and breakfast is served there. (So nice little historical touch)
The hotel lobby and entrance to Fitz's bar, named for Pat Fitzgerald, who as a 3 month old was abandoned in the hotel lobby in 1939. (Old hotels have lots of interesting stories!)
The hotel has its own beehive on the roof (it even has its own room number 6B!!!) and it uses its own honey products in the hotel.
Summary
I quite liked this hotel, the location just made my stay in Cardiff so easy. Staff were helpful and friendly so would stay here again.
