Merry Christmas from Mt. Gambier

 Christmas 2020

Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre

There's not much travelling happening this year but I did manage a quick road trip to the Southeast of South Australia. I spent an afternoon in Mt. Gambier and quite liked how decorated the Arts Centre and the Old Town Hall next to it were. Very festive!

Gardiner Fountain

A rather impressive fountain at the side of the Town Hall, it was donated to the town in 1884 by Captain Robersons Gardiner. (Donate a big fountain and it gets named after you!) He was one of the first settlers in the area and owned some of the town's historic buildings.

Behind the Town Hall and the Cultural Centre is a rather nice garden called The Cave Gardens.

The Cave Gardens at street level

The Cave Gardens are based around a sinkhole that was Mt. Gambier's original fresh water source. Victorian style plantings and layout were cultivated going down to the cave. In the early 2000s the gardens were revamped back to their original design with new paths and viewing areas. There are 2 artificial waterfalls created by stormwater, neither were active when I saw the garden. Still nice to stroll down to the bottom.

The Cave

This was my first trip to Mt. Gambier and I thought it was quite a pretty city with some nicely maintained old buildings in the city centre. And naturally the Blue Lake was the main attraction.
