Carrick Hill gardens, South Australia

The gardens that Ursula planned. Carrick Hill had been the private home of Edward and Ursula Hayward. Both Edward and Ursula came from prominent (read wealthy) South Australian families, Ursula's were pastoralists and landowners and her father gave the couple the land as a wedding gift. They built the house in the years 1937 to 39 and during the same period Ursula planned the garden. Momotaro The statue of Momotaro wasn't one of the Hayward's acquisitions but rather comes from the time that the state government accepted the bequest of the Carrick Hill estate and open it to the public. The statue was presented by the city of Okayama on the occasion of Adelaide's 150 anniversary of white settlement in 1986. (Which is also when the estate was officially opened to visitors, Edward Hayward having died in 1983, Ursula in 1972. Information from helpful pamphlet when you enter the house!) Royal Tiaras

My collection so far (that I've seen, not own!) The Scroll tiara, worn by Kate Middleton on her wedding day. I kept getting tiara youtube videos recommended to me and then realised I've seen quite a few of the recommendations in real life. So as I like putting together collections, here are the ones I've seen. Cartier Exhibition, National Gallery of Australia The National Gallery of Australia held a Cartier exhibition in 2018. I travelled to Canberra and was able to see this exhibition, on display were some tiaras as well as other jewels and Cartier objects. What made this exhibition special was that the items on display were not just those owned by Cartier but also loaned to Cartier for the exhibition, including jewels owned by Queen Elizabeth II. Once such item was the Scroll tiara, ( the Halo Cartier tiara) which the Queen loaned to Kate Middleton on her wedding day. Museum of Old and New Art (MONA)

Hobart, Tasmania MONA is Tasmania's newest attraction, it opened in January 2011. The museum is the largest privately funded institution in Australia and it houses the collection of its (very wealthy!) owner, David Walsh. Full disclosure here in that I'm not the biggest fan of modern art, so originally this museum wasn't on my list of places to see in Tasmania. But I had recently read a travel writer's report his visit and he had caught the ferry up the river from central Hobart. I loved the idea of a ferry ride on the river and then seeing some art. The ferry departs from the Brooke Street Pier which also houses a large tourist booking service so it's possible to buy a combined ticket for the ferry and entrance to the museum. Once at MONA there are 99 steps up from the jetty to the main external area. There was some huffing and puffing from the ferry passengers going up the stairs! Abigwideworld: There's a big wide world out there and I want to see as much of it as possible, is a sentence that I have used over the years to explain why I love to travel so much. I'm fortunate that I've been able to see quite a bit of the world, but there's a lot more to see! This blog is a great way for me to record my travels.
