High interest posts

Camden High Street, London

Camden was a new area of London for me to explore, I went there primarily to visit the markets but enjoyed the various sights on the High Street as well. I've already written a post about my visit to the markets. http://theresabigwideworld.blogspot.com.au/2015/06/camden-lock-markets.html To get to the Lock markets from the Camden town Tube Station, you needed to walk up the High Street. It's a one way street lined with small shops, mainly clothing and souvenir stores. What makes the High Street interesting is how some of the buildings are decorated from the outside. Just before arriving at the Lock markets I saw this store, it's a clothing store and those are old sewing machines, in the little window boxes. I loved the display, totally charmed by it. A close up. Poreč, Croatia

Back to the ancestral homeland! A bit of a posting break as I've had a few days in Istria (the Croatian part) in a farmhouse belonging to a family member. I didn't have any internet access. Before heading off to the countryside, I spent a bit of time in the largest nearby town. I've been coming here since babyhood but haven't been in the old town for a few years so had a look around. The old town of Poreč (pronounced Por-ech) is built on a peninsula so it could be defended from land attacks, there used to be a wall across the peninsula where it goes out onto the mainland. The wall has long disappeared, all that's left is one of the towers. It amused me to see what this ancient tower is being used for now. I refer to the town by its Croatian name of Poreč as that's what I've always called it since I've from the era of when it was part of Yugoslavia and now Croatia. It's also known by its Italian name of Parenzo and the signs now have both n

ANZAC Day 2024

Memorials from this past year. Truro Memorial The Truro Memorial can be found in the town's main street, Moorundi Street which is part of the Sturt Highway. It was unveiled on the 31st of July 1921, at the time it was a memorial to those in the district who were killed in the Great War. Also it includes the names of 2 service men who drowned soon after they returned. After World War II, the names of those killed in that war were added. The memorial shows a soldier, carved from Angaston marble, standing to attention on a plinth of pink granite. Yacka Memorial The Yacka Memorial is in the main street as you drive through the town. It commemorates the 13 men from the town who were killed in World War I. In November 1947 the South Australian Premier Thomas Playford unveiled a side plaque commemorating those who were killed in World War II. The memorial was unveiled on the 5th of August 1921. Abigwideworld: There's a big wide world out there and I want to see as much of it as possible, is a sentence that I have used over the years to explain why I love to travel so much. I'm fortunate that I've been able to see quite a bit of the world, but there's a lot more to see! This blog is a great way for me to record my travels.
